Fillmore Gazette: Question 3

One of the most serious issues related to this development is traffic congestion. Just the North Fillmore Specific Plan alone (700 homes) will generate more than 6,000 average daily trips. With the more than 2,000 homes plus additional commercial building planned within the next 14 years, we will generate more than 20,389 average daily trips according to the 2002 Citywide Traffic and Circulation Study. Along with traffic problems will be increases in air pollution, noise, accidents, crime and public service costs.

To me, the most serious, yet intangible issue is the loss of our small town, family friendly agricultural roots. We’re losing our views to three story buildings that don’t fit into the community. The crowding and traffic that this development brings puts people on edge and reduces our quality of life. Is it worth it? Do we want to live with high density similar to LA County?

Our growth rate is currently 0.8%. There are now more homes on the market than we have had for years. There is no urgency to build out Fillmore at this pace. The best way to resolve these serious issues is to curtail the number of homes in North Fillmore and elsewhere with the slow controlled growth that citizens expect and deserve.
